SEAMUS FINNEGAN, as Catholic-bred former teacher and onetime political activist, has become a prolific commentator on Northern Ireland. He has moved from the early monologues of outrage through the complexities of the situation (ACT OF UNION, SOLDIER and NORTH) to exploration of loyalties and principles on a wider scale in THE WAR TRILOGY, which spans the Spanish Civil War (THE SPANISH PLAY), the Holocaust in Europe (THE GERMAN CONNECTION) and Israel (THE CEMETARY OF EUROPE).  His plays are notable for their non-sectarian, even ironical detachment. History, language and the ironies of fate continue to be at the centre of his work.
