STEVE MAY won many awards for drama, poetry and fiction.  His radio play, FAIR HEARING, “an audacious and provocative piece”, was commissioned as part of the Sir Michael Tippett 90th birthday celebrations.  He was the author of several novels including CLOSER CLOSER, shortlisted for the Lancashire Children’s Book Award and FRIENDLY FIRE (formerly published by Methuen under the title THE FISH FLY LOW).  EGGHEAD, a brilliant, dark psychological thriller,’ has been widely praised for its quirky humour, as was HOW’S HARRY, a cautionary tale about owning a hamster, aimed at the younger reader.  He adapted his teenage novel, 15 GOING ON 20, ‘a film in 24 exposures’ about Laura, age 15, on holiday in Greece pretending to be 20, for BBC TV.  His young adults books include  DAZZER PLAYS ON,  selected as one of  top 10 best reads of the year by The Telegraph, and recorded by Paul McGann (Chivers audio), and ONE CHANCE (Egmont) set in France at the outbreak of WW2.   Steve’s radio dramas include FACING THE MIRROR, about a man who is turning into his mother; CHESS WARS, set around the Fisher-Spassky 1972  chess match; and 10 episodes in the HIGHER series dealing with contemporary issues in Higher Education.  Steve was head of the Bath Spa Creative Writing Department for many years before his death in July 2023.
